A search firm is compensated when the client’s company decides to hire a candidate that the firm has presented them with.

A company compensates a search firm to find and recruit candidates on an ongoing project basis. 

The primary difference between a contingency and a retained search is why the executive search firm is hired and when will the due payment from the client to the executive search firm made.
